Chapter Twelve

Vaguely, she was aware that his room hadn’t changed since she’d awoke there that first morning, but she didn’t really have time to look around because the door clicked shut with a quiet finality, which drew her gaze to the man beside her. Biting her lips, she clasped her hands in sudden anxiety.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” he asked, even as his larger body crowded against hers, forcing her to tilt her head back to meet his gaze. Across the room a fire burst to life, the vibrant light of the licking flames illuminating his face and dancing upon the dark sheen of his hair.

“Yes,” she replied softly, leaning into his touch as he cupped a hand over her cheek, his thumb stroking the jut of her cheekbone. The word was barely out of her mouth before his lips covered hers, his desire a tangible thing burning through the layers of clothing that separated them.

Pulling away, he whispered against her lips, “I don’t know what I would have done if you had said no. I want you so much.” But she knew what he would have done and the knowledge bolstered her dwindling confidence; he would have walked away, he would have done the honourable thing.

“It made me sneeze, too,” she admitted, “at first.” Looking at her in surprise, he mirrored her amusement after a moment.

Walking over to a chest of draws, he withdrew a clean handkerchief and went to dip a corner into the jug of water standing on the bedside table. “May I?”

Feeling the return of the earlier tension, Elira nonetheless tilted her head to further expose her neck, shivering as he gently wiped the cool cloth over her throat, washing away the cloying scent, his fingers following the movement of her throat as she swallowed. Dropping the handkerchief to the floor, he moved closer until their bodies were aligned, dipping his head to nuzzle at her neck with a playful affection that had her heart stuttering.

“Much better,” his low voice was as much of a caress as the hands roving confidently down her back.
